Our Trilingual Two-year Old
By Paul Vernon on Sep 15, 2009 in Abi
We’ve told many of you how great Abi’s language skills are in the 3+ languages that she is surrounded with. Her English and Akha are by far her strongest languages – and her Thai is not far behind. She also has about a dozen other words from other languages that she has picked up in her travels – Chinese, Burmese, and German (Prost!).
For a while now, we’ve been trying to capture on film her nightly ritual of counting to ten in her three natural languages: English, Akha and Thai. Unfortunately, our video camera has terrible audio – so we finally got her playing with the microphone @ Dad’s computer. So, for those of you interested in seeing a two-year old counting to ten in three languages, check out the video below!

That was SOOOOO cute!!! She is so smart! We miss you and love you all!
I love it!
She’ll grow up so smart!
Wow! I am super impressed! We are moving to Poland and our Emma will be 2 1/2. I am so looking forward to seeing her learn/absorb the language!
@Alexis – you’ll be amazed at how quickly she learns culture & language. She’ll pass you guys up quickly.
Paul and Lori/she is just precious and I loved hearing her count to 10! I love her/thanks for sharing.
Dear Paul and Lori,
Paul, when you were born, your Mom and Dad lived in our duplex on Wolff Street in Denver. I would never have dreamed that you would be living in a bamboo/dirt floor hut half way round the world. It is a huge blessing for us to see how the Lord is using you to bless the Akha people. When I was teaching with your Mom at Jesus Center School, the Lord gave me Mt9:38 as my “life verse.” I have prayed that the Lord of the harvest would sent forth laborers into the harvest…and you and your family are a blessed answer to those prayers. Your computer skills are the “frosting on the cake.” We pray the Lord will use you mightily. Love, Ken and Doris
Thanks Ken, love that passage!
